February 2003



February 28th
At Severn Beach this afternoon, a Jack Snipe was in the salt marsh with a single Water Pipit  and 4 Rock Pipit. There were 2 Stonechat at Aust Warth. The Godwits were still present with 2000 Dunlin at Northwick Warth.

February 27th
The Godwit flock remained at Northwick Warth and an adult Mediterranean Gull was roosting on the shingle island off Severn Beach.

February 26th
The best bird of the day was a Tree Sparrow, seen briefly at New Passage this morning. The Godwits, 2000 Dunlin and a Knot remained at Northwick Warth. A Water Rail and Jack Snipe were seen at Chittening Warth.

February 25th
The usual flock of Godwits and a Knot remained on Northwick Warth along with single Stonechat and Little Owl. There was a Peregrine at Aust Cliff. In the Severn Beach/Chittening Warth area there was an adult Mediterranean Gull along with 3 more Stonechat.

February 24th
The usual  flock of Black-tailed Godwit and Bar-tailed Godwit on Northwick Warth with 250 Lapwing, 800 Dunlin and two Knot. There were 2 Raven at Aust Cliff and 2 Stonechat on the Severn Beach Salt marsh. A flock of 30 Shoveler were present here at high tide.

February 23rd
The White-fronted Goose was still on Northwick Warth along with a Merlin, the flock of 46 Black-tailed Godwits and 12 Bar-tailed Godwits. The flash on Northwick Warth had a roosting flock of 250 Lapwing and 1000 Dunlin. There were 2 Stonechat on Aust Warth and 2 Siskin and a Peregrine at Severn Beach.

February 22nd
The first “wild” geese of the year with circa 35 Brent Geese off Severn Beach at midday and a White-fronted Goose on Northwick Warth. Other notable birds were two Raven, 2 Stonechat and a single Merlin at Aust Warth.

February 21st
On Northwick Warth the usual Dunlin and Godwit flocks were present along with 400 Lapwing. Twelve Ringed Plover were on Severn Beach at high tide. A Little Owl was on Northwick Warth and another was calling late evening in Severn Beach.

February 20th
On Northwick Warth there were 2000 Dunlin, a Knot, 46 Black-tailed Godwits and 11 Bar-tailed Godwits. Two Raven flew over Aust Warth.

February 19th
A Merlin was on Aust Warth and the Godwit flock was still present at Northwick Warth. Further south at Chittening Warth there was a Jack Snipe, Water Pipit (first February record) and 2 Stonechat. There were 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls at Avonmouth Sewage works.

February 18th
The Godwit flock remained at Northwick Warth along with 2000 Dunlin  (Birds disturbed today by idiots shooting Clay pigeons on the salt marsh!). A Stonechat was at Severn Beach and the adult Mediterranean Gull was still at Avonmouth Sewage works.

February 17th
At Severn Beach; a Yellowhammer (early morning only), 2 Raven, Water Rail, male Stonechat, 16 Ringed Plover and 2 Lesser Redpoll (Orchard Pools). The mixed flock of Black-tailed Godwit and Bar-tailed Godwit were still off Northwick Warth and a Little Owl was in willows there. There were 3000 Dunlin and another Stonechat at Chittening Warth late afternoon. The adult Mediterranean Gull  remained at Avonmouth Sewage works.

February 16th
Very little to report other than the Godwits at Northwick Warth along with 200 Curlew and 300 Lapwing. A Little Owl was on Aust Warth at dusk. An almost summer plumage Mediterranean Gull and 2 Chiffchaff were seen at Avonmouth Sewage works.

February 15th
The Godwits remained at Northwick Warth with 1500 Dunlin and 240 Lapwing. Four Siskin flew over New Passage. At Aust there were 2 Raven and a Merlin. At Chittening Warth there were another 300 Dunlin, a Green Sandpiper and 3 Stonechat.

February 14th
The usual Godwits on Northwick Warth, 2 Raven and 2 Stonechat at Aust Warth. A Lesser Redpoll was at the Orchard Pools, Severn Beach

February 13th
In very cold conditions just the usual 42 Black-tailed Godwits and 12 Bar-tailed Godwits on Northwick Warth.

February 12th
At Northwick Warth there was a Little Owl, 42 Black-tailed Godwits and 12 Bar-tailed Godwits. There were still 20 Gadwall with 120 Shelduck at Severn Beach. On Aust Warth 2 Stonechat and 2 Raven were present late afternoon.

February 11th
A slight improvement with 42 Black-tailed Godwits and 12 Bar-tailed Godwits at Northwick Warth. A Green Sandpiper and 2 Lesser Redpoll at the Orchard Pools, Severn Beach. There were 20 Gadwall and a Spotted Redshank off Severn Beach.

February 10th
The 30 Black-tailed Godwits and 5 Bar-tailed Godwits remained on Northwick Warth and there were 2 Stonechat at Severn Beach.

February 9th
On Northwick Warth there were 2 Raven, 30 Black-tailed Godwits and 5 Bar-tailed Godwits. Five Siskin were present in Birch trees at the Orchard Pools, Severn Beach. An adult Mediterranean Gull and 2 Chiffchaff were seen late afternoon at Avonmouth Sewage Works.

February 8th
A drake Smew seen at New Passage was only the fourth Severnside record. Two Stonechat at Severn Beach, 2 more on Aust Warth and another plus Green Sandpiper at Chittening Warth (Sea Bank Pools). Two Bar-tailed Godwits were seen at Nothwick Warth.


February 7th
There were 3000 Dunlin, 11 Bar-tailed Godwits and 2 Black-tailed Godwit s at Northwick Warth, the Little Egret was still at the Orchard Pools, Severn Beach.

February 6th
The same as yesterday; Little Egret, 58 Black-tailed Godwits and 2000 Dunlin were still present. Roll on spring ...!!

February 5th
The Little Egret was still at the Orchard Pools, 58 Black-tailed Godwit and 2000 Dunlin on Northwick Warth. Two adult Mediterranean Gulls were seen at Avonmouth Sewage works.

February 4th
The only birds of note were the Little Egret on the Orchard Pools, Severn Beach and 35 Black-tailed Godwit at Northwick Warth. There were two adult Mediterranean Gulls at Avonmouth Sewage works.

February 3rd
Just the Little Egret and a 1st winter Little Gull on the Orchard Pools, Severn Beach. On Northwick Warth there were 2000 Dunlin and at Avonmouth Sewage works an adult Mediterranean Gull was present.

February 2nd
Much the same as yesterday; 32 Black-tailed Godwits and 20 Bar-tailed Godwits along with 20 Lapwing, 160 Oystercatcher and 2000 Dunlin at Northwick Warth. The Little Egret was joined by Canada Geese (scarce here) at the Orchard Pools. Also at the pools were 10 Siskin and a Green Sandpiper.

February 1st
The Little Egret was still at the Orchard Pools with a Green Sandpiper. On Northwick Warth there were 20 Bar-tailed Godwits and 32 Black-tailed Godwit along with a Peregrine. There were  Stonechat at Aust Warth.
