2009 SIGHTINGS
An awesome year with 180 reported species including 4 firsts for Severnside one of which was a first for Britain in the form of a Black-bellied Storm Petrel, a Pacific Diver, a Glossy Ibis and a Semipalmated Sandpiper. Other rarities included Little Auks, Grey Phalaropes, Avocets, Wood Sandpipers, Leach’s Petrels, Storm Petrels, Red Kites, Ospreys, Hen Harrier, Marsh Harrier, Garganey, Eider, Whooper Swans, Bewick’s Swans, Shags, Pomarine Skuas, Little Terns, Sandwich Terns, Iceland Gull, Marsh Warbler, Richard’s Pipit, Shorelarks, Blue-headed and Grey-headed Wagtails, Black Redstarts, Long-eared Owl, numerous Firecrest and Short-eared Owl sightings.
Every year there are a few surprise species that are not reported and this year they included Black Tern and Barnacle Goose. Predictions for 2010 must include the first record of Cattle Egret.
