An exciting year but once again no new additions to the Severnside list. A total of 178 species was achieved. Good birds for the year included Slavonian Grebe, Common Cranes, Great White Egrets, a record flock of 23 Shags, Garganey, Egyptian Goose, 2 Roseate Terns, Sabine’s Gull, Pectoral Sandpiper, Temminck’s Stint, Purple Sandpiper, Avocets, Wood Sandpipers, Storm Petrels, Osprey, Marsh Harriers, Long-eared Owl, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Ring Ouzel, Black Redstart, Yellow-browed Warbler, 2 Firecrests, Golden Oriole, Crossbills, Turtle Dove, multiple Water Pipits and Blue-headed Wagtails.
Every year there are a few surprise species that are not reported and this year they included Pomarine Skua, Sandwich Tern, Leach’s Petrel, Eider, Red-breasted Merganser, Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler.
Predictions for 2017 must include a better year for Spring seabirds and even more good birds dropping on to the Pilning Wetland with any one of Black-winged Stilt, Spotted Crake or Whiskered Tern being good contenders.
