An interesting year with 3 new additions to the Severnside list; a male Serin, a long overdue and much predicted Black-winged Stilt and a flyover Common Rosefinch. A total of 178 species was achieved. Other good birds for the year included a Great White Egret, 2 Cattle Egrets, 2 Cranes, at least 4 Spoonbills, a Bittern, a Shag, Great Northern Diver, 2 Garganey, a Mandarin, 8 Eider, 2 White-fronted Geese, an Egyptian Goose, a male Hen Harrier, Marsh Harriers, an Osprey, Red Kites, Storm Petrels, Leach’s Petrels, a Pomarine Skua, 2 Sabine’s Gulls, 2 Grey Phalaropes, a Temminck’s Stint, 2 spring Wood Sandpipers, Spotted Redshanks, Avocets, a Pied Flycatcher, Black Redstart, Turtle Dove, Wood Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler, Blue-headed Wagtail, Shorelark and Woodlark. There was some breeding success for Lapwing and Little Ringed Plover.

Every year there are a few surprise species that are not reported and this year they included Little Tern, Red-breasted Merganser, Goldeneye, Bewick’s Swan, Purple Sandpiper, Ring Ouzel, Wood Warbler, Firecrest and unbelievably Yellowhammer.

Predictions for 2018 must include Spotted Crake and perhaps a Whiskered Tern or White-winged Black Tern.
