2019 SIGHTINGS
A relatively quiet year with just 178 species being recorded and one new addition to the list in the form of two Citrine Wagtails. Despite sightings of less than annual birds, a few species were in very low numbers. Scarce or rare sightings involved at least 15 Great White Egrets, single Glossy Ibis, Spoonbill and Cattle Egret, 5 wintering White-fronted Geese, 18 Barnacle Geese, 2 Egyptian Geese, 4 Goldeneye and several Garganey. Seabirds included Pomaraine Skuas, Great Skuas, 5 species of Tern, Storm Petrels and Leach’s Petrels. At least 3 Ospreys, 9 Marsh Harriers and 11 Red Kites were reported and waders included Severnside’s 4th Temminck’s Stint, Little Stints, single Grey Phalarope, Pectoral Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper and several Spotted Redshanks. A singing Nightingale summered and other notable passerines included Ring Ouzel, Black Redstart, Blue-headed Wagtail, Channel Wagtail, Treecreepers,Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Snow Bunting and Lapland Bunting. Disappointments included no Purple Sandpiper, Bewick’s Swan, Eider, Shag, Divers or Firecrest.
