An exciting year and despite being the first since 2008 with no new additions to the Severnside list the total of 182 species was achieved. Good birds for the year included Black Guillemot, Montagu’s Harrier, Red-throated Pipit, Glossy Ibis, Common Crane, 5 Great White Egrets, 2 Spoonbills, White Stork, Avocets, Grey Phalaropes, at least 4 Wood Sandpipers, Green-winged Teal, Eider, 5 Red-breasted Mergansers, Red-throated, Black-throated and Great Northern Divers, Black-necked Grebe, Leach’s Petrels, Storm Petrels, Pomarine Skuas, 2 Ospreys, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Dartford Warbler, 2 Ring Ouzels, 2 Black Redstarts, 2 Firecrests, Hawfinches and Wryneck.
Every year there are a few surprise species that are not reported and this year they included Goldeneye, White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Bewick’s Swan, Garganey, Woodcock, Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler and Snow Bunting.
Predictions for 2016 must include even more good birds dropping on to the Pilning Wetland on Northwick Warth with Black-winged Stilt and Temminck’s Stint being good contenders.
