February is generally another quiet month with only a total of 163 species recorded. Gales in this month have produced Storm and Leach’s Petrel, Pomarine Skua and all the records of Puffin. Other rarities seen include Spoonbill (2004, 2023), Bittern (2011,2012), Great White Egret (2023), Glossy Ibis (2022), Ring-billed Gull (1987), Pink-footed Goose(1996, 2023), Green-winged Teal (2015), Shorelark (2004), Great Grey Shrike (1999,2000,2004) and Cirl Bunting (1943).

A cold and quiet end to the month. Sightings from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 600 Black-tailed Godwits, 235 Dunlin, 20 Curlew, 60+ Redshank, 40 Oystercatchers, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 2 Baranacle Geese, 4 Greylag Geese, 6 Canada Geese, 10 Shelduck, 26 Shoveler, 90 Wigeon, 85 Teal, 4 Tufted Duck, single Pintail and Pochard, 2 Mistle Thrushes (scarce here) and a Peregrine. The Black Redstart, 38 Shelduck, 20 Wigeon, 35 Oystercatchers, 30 Curlew, 2 Redshank and a Stonechat were seen from the sea wall at Severn Beach this morning.

The weather remained the same with an Easterly breeze. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 500 Black-tailed Godwits, 48 Redshank, 225 Dunlin, 13 Ringed Plover, 38 Turnstones, 20 Curlew, single Lapwing, Little Egret, Grey Heron, 2 Barnacle Geese, 2 Canada Geese, 40 Shelduck, 110 Wigeon, 140 Teal,4 Tufted Duck, a Pochard, 4 Stock Doves, 2 Ravens, single Kestrel, Rock Pipit, Stonechat and Siskin. The Black Redstart, another 150 Dunlin, 28 Ringed Plover, 20 Curlew, 15 Turnstones, 64 Shelduck, 15 Wigeon, 2 Stonechats, 2 Stock Doves and a Kestrel were seen at Severn Beach.

A sunny day with a cool breeze. Five calling White-fronted Geese flew in from the East at Severn Beach and then headed down river at 9.55. Other reports from here involved 1200 Dunlin, 60+ Redshank, 35 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, single Snipe and Canada Goose, 55 Shelduck, 30 Wigeon, 50+ Teal and another singing Cetti’s Warbler by the “Pipes”. At least 420 Black-tailed Godwits, 60 Lapwing, 2 Redshank, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Shelduck, 18 Shoveler, 70 Teal, 4 Wigeon, single Tufted Duck, Pochard, Grey Wagtail and Kestrel were seen on Pilning Wetland. Combined reports from New Passage included 1500 Dunlin, 200+ Black-tailed Godwits, 120 Curlew, 50 Redshank, 4 Lapwing, 6 Greylag Geese, 3 Canada Geese, 56 Shelduck and 100+ Wigeon. A Spoonbill was reported flying North at Aust Warth.

Combined reports from Pilning Wetland/new Passage included 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 1500+ Dunlin, 100 Redshank, 110 Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, 7 Lapwing, 15 Turnstones, single Snipe, Little Egret and Grey Heron, the Pink-footed Goose, 2 Barnacle Geese, 6 Greylag Geese, 13 Canada Geese, 69 Shelduck, 150 Wigeon, 120 Teal, 60+ Shoveler, single Tufted Duck and Pochard. Reports from Severn Beach involved the Black Redstart, 14 Ringed Plover, 15 Turnstones, 40 Dunlin, a Redshank, 15 Shelduck and 20 Wigeon. Another day with a cool North East breeze. A Pink-footed Goose (presumably the same bird seen on 5th February) was found with 31 Canada Geese at New Passage/Northwick Warth where 12 Avocets, 2500+ Dunlin, 200 Black-tailed Godwits, 90 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, 110+ Redshank, 15 Turnstones, 2 Mute Swans, 4 Greylag Geese, 87 Shelduck, 400 Wigeon, 30 Teal and 4 Shoveler were also present. Pilning Wetland produced 400 Black-tailed Godwits, 80 Lapwing, 2 Redshank, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 150 Teal, single Pochard, Tufted Duck, Kestrel and 2 Mistle Thrushes. Combined reports from Severn Beach included the Black Redstart, singing Cetti’S Warbler, the first Kingfisher of the year, 3 Turnstone, 5 Dunlin, a Ringed Plover, 2 Canada Geese, 20 Shelduck and 20 Wigeon.

A cool day with a North East breeze and another very high Spring tide. Much of the same was found at Severn Beach including the Black Redstart, singing Cetti’s Warbler, 300 Dunlin heading up river, 2 Curlew, a Snipe, 26 Shelduck, 40 Wigeon and 2 Teal. Sightings from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved 2800+ Dunlin, 12 Turnstones, 200 Redshank, 60 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 2 Barnacle Geese, 6 Greylag Geese, 32 Canada Geese, 72 Shelduck, 150 Wigeon, 120 Teal, 5 Gadwall, 56 Shoveler, 5 Tufted Duck and a Pochard. A visit to the Aust Warth area with a 14.3 metre high tide produced 2000+ distant Dunlin, 150 Black-tailed Godwits flying high North, 35 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, a Grey Heron, 22 Shelduck, 40 Wigeon, 35+ Common Gulls, a Great Black-backed Gull, single Raven, Peregrine, Kestrel, Cetti’s Warbler and Rock Pipit. Reports from Severn Beach included the Black Redstart on the sea defences, a singing Cetti’s Warbler near the railway station and a Little Egret, 6 Gadwall, 4 Canada Geese and 2 Coot at the Orchard Pools. Just 2 Oystercatchers, 6 Curlew, a Snipe, 2 Canada Geese, 5 Gadwall, 5 Shelduck, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, 5 Stonechats, 2 Rock Pipits and a Cetti’s Warbler were reported from Chittening Warth. Reports from Severn Beach included 41 Shelduck, 40 Wigeon, a Snipe, the Black Redstart, 2 Rock Pipits and a singing Cetti’s Warbler.

A mainly overcast day with some some drizzle and a west wind. Much of the same was reported from Severn Beach this morning’s high tide including the Black Redstart, 16 Ringed Plover, 5 Snipe, 2 Curlew, 25 Shelduck, 20 Wigeon, 2 Teal, single Rock Pipit, Stonechat and singing Cetti’s Warbler. At least 230 Black-tailed Godwits, a Little Egret, 3 Grey Herons, just 35 Teal, a Shelduck, 3 Tufted Duck and a Pochard were reported from Pilning Wetland. At least 2500 Dunlin, 200 Redshank, 120 Black-tailed Godwits, 45 Curlew, 60 Oystercatchers, 9 Turnstones, 2 Barnacle Geese, 5 Greylag Geese, 56 Canada Geese, 32 Shelduck, 120 Wigeon, 5 Teal and 4 Gadwall were seen from New Passage.

An adult Mediterranean Gull (colour ringed), 16 Ringed Plover, 30 Dunlin, 60 Oystercatchers, 12 Curlew, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, the Black Redstart, a singing Cetti’s Warbler and a Kestrel were present at Severn Beach. Nearby, 90 Turnstones, 250 Dunlin, 200 Lapwing, 50 Curlew, 2 Barnacle Geese, 24 Canada Geese, 30+ Shelduck, 2 Shoveler and 80 Wigeon were seen from New Passage. Single Black Redstart, singing Cetti’s Warbler, Stonechat and Siskin, 2 Canada Geese, 37 Shelduck were seen on a low tide visit to Severn Beach.

Sightings from New Passage included 400 Dunlin, 50 Redshank, 40 Curlew, 24 Oystercatchers, 11 Turnstones, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Barnacle Geese, 13 Canada Geese, 20 Shelduck, 20 Shoveler and 100 Wigeon. A visit to Pilning Wetland produced at least 400 Black-tailed Godwits, 300 Lapwings, 7 Snipe, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, Greylag Geese (heard only), 20 Wigeon, 250 Teal, 2 Shelduck, 40 Shoveler, 10 Gadwall, 6 Tufted Duck, a Pochard, the 2nd calendar year male Marsh Harrier and a singing Cetti’s Warbler. The Black Redstart, a male Blackcap and a Kestrel were seen at Severn Beach.

A visit to the Orchard Pools in Severn Beach produced a Little Egret and 30 flyover Lapwings.

Nearby, another 96 Canada Geese, 2 Barnacle Geese, 80 Wigeon, 4 Shelduck, 2 Shoveler, 120 Oystercatchers, 350 Dunlin, 35 Curlew, a few Turnstones and Redshank were seen from New Passage at low tide. Another 14 Shelduck, 10 Wigeon and a flock of 14 Greenfinches were seen from the sea wall at Severn Beach.

A cool and breezy start to the month. Combined reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included a 1st winter Bewick’s Swan, 2 Barnacle Geese, 25 Greylag Geese, 78 Canada Geese, 19 Shelduck, 190 Wigeon, 140 Teal, 36 Shoveler, 5 Gadwall, 2 Tufted Duck, 330 Black-tailed Godwits, 550 Lapwings, 60 Curlew, 730 Dunlin, 90 Redshank, 70 Oystercatchers and 90 Turnstones.
