Despite the onset of winter and the decrease in hours of daylight, October is a month with the highest number of recorded species, with a grand total of 213. Rarities have included records of Black-necked Grebe (1996,2015), Red-footed Falcon (2014), Long-billed Dowitcher (1977), Lesser Yellowlegs (1984), White-rumped Sandpiper (1985), Red-necked Phalarope (2001), American Golden Plover (2013), Black Guillemot (1998), Bearded Tits (2012), Yellow-browed Warbler (2001,2013, 2015,2016) and Red-throated Pipit (2015). Other national and local rarities recorded include Glossy Ibis (2009, 2023), Ring-billed Gull, Spoonbills, Cattle Egret (2019, 2020), Great White Egrets (2016, 2019, 2020, 2021), Cranes (2016), Whooper Swans, Mandarin (2017), Roseate Tern, Hooded Crow, Dartford Warbler, Montagu’s Harrier (1991), 3 Pallid Swifts (2022), Hen Harrier, Ring Ouzel, Shorelark, Woodlark, Mealy Redpoll, Common Rosefinch (2017), Firecrest, Hawfinch and Common Crossbill.

A day with some brief sunny spells and some torrential rain showers. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/ New Passage area included involved 90 Lapwings, 120 Curlew, 40 Redshank, 9 Dunlin, 5 Snipe, 2 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 58 Greylag Geese, 280 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 10 Shelduck, 900 Teal, 220 Wigeon, 6 Gadwall, 45+ Shelduck, single Pintail, Tufted Duck, Kestrel and Peregrine. Another 20 Curlew, 80 Wigeon, 39 Shelduck, 2 Grey Herons, a Water Rail, 2 singing Cetti’s Warblers, 2 Stonechats, a Rock Pipit and 5 Redpolls were reported at Severn Beach. Two Short-eared Owls and 2 Stonechats were seen at Aust Warth this afternoon.

Another sunny day and an almost 14 metre high tide. Early morning reports from Aust Cliff/services included 3500+ Woodpigeons, 2 Peregrines, a Kestrel, 3 Ravens, a late Swallow, 2 Chifchaffs, a Grey Wagtail, 2 Brambling, 7 Redpoll and 16 Siskins. Nearby, a Short-eared Owl and a Merlin were seen at Aust Warth salt marsh. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved a Black-tailed Godwit, 200 Redshank, 10 Lapwing, 140 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, 1100 Dunlin, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 60 Greylag Geese, 35 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 21 Shelduck, 110 Wigeon, 340 Teal, 45+ Shoveler, a Pintail, 4 Ravens, single Merlin, Kestrel, Stonechat and 2 Rock Pipits. Two Water Rails, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 70 Wigeon, 25 Shelduck, 2 Stonechats, single Kestrel and Rock Pipit were reported from Severn Beach. A Cetti’s Warbler was heard at Sea Bank Power station, Chittening Warth.

A mainly bright and sunny day. A Short-eared Owl, 2 Kestrels, 2 Stonechats, 20 Shelduck and 40 Oystercatchers were reported from Aust Warth. At least 150 Dunlin, 100 Redshank, single Whimbrel, Black-tailed Godwit, Ringed Plover, Turnstone, Little Egret, Great White Egret, 56 Greylag Geese, 25 Canada Geese, 100+ Wigeon, 40+ Shoveler and 300+ Teal were reported from Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Meanwhile I had another day off the patch making the most of the opportunity to visit the wonderful Flamborough Head in East Yorkshire. A good selection of national rarities were seen including the 10th British record of Two-barred Greenish Warbler, an obliging Pallid Swift, the ugliest bird I have seen this year in the form of a moulting Red-headed Bunting, 2 Dusky Warblers, plus a Hen Harrier, many hundreds of Pink-footed Geese, dozens of Yellowhammers and Tree Sparrows (both of which are rarely now seen here).

At least 70 Dunlin, 5 Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers, 2 Grey Herons, 12 Shelduck, 30 Wigeon, 2 Teal, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, 2 singing Cetti’s Warblers and a Rock Pipit were reported from Severn Beach. At least 15 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Knot, 600 Dunlin, 60 Turnstones, 90 Lapwings, 50 Redshank, 4 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 4 Barnacle Geese, 60+ Greylag Geese, 84 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 28 Shelduck, 45 Shoveler, 500 Teal, 60 Wigeon, 5 Gadwall, 2 Stonechats and a Rock Pipit were seen at Pilning Wetland/New Passage.

An Osprey flew South over New Passage at 15.44 (5th bird of the year) and other reports from the New Passage/Pilning Wetland area involved 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 21 Turnstones, 20 Curlew, 52 Lapwings, 8 Oystercatchers, 160 Redshank, 68 Dunlin, 4 Snipe, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 90 Canada Geese, 29 Greylag Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 20 Shelduck, 90 Wigeon, 280 Teal, a Pintail, 2 Ravens, single Stonechat, Kestrel and Grey Wagtail. Combined reports from Severn Beach included 50+ Turnstones, 90 Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, 3 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 3 singing Cetti’s Warblers, 2 Rock Pipits and a Stonechat. A day of drizzle followed by some sunshine. Once again Aust Cliff/services produced some interesting sightings including a Cattle Egret (flew SE), 7 Little Gulls (flew SW) along with 21 Dunlin, 2 Grey Wagtails, 2 Ravens, 5 Redpolls, 1600 Chaffinches, 200 Siskins, single Sparrowhawk and Peregrine. Two Little Stints, 4 Avocets, 2 Grey Plover, a Common Scoter, 165 Siskins, 300 Chaffinches, a Brambling and 35 Redwings were reported from New Passage. A visit to Pilning Wetland produced just 12 Wigeon and 130 Teal. A morning visit to Severn Beach produced 3 Grey plover, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 10 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Oystercatchers, 140 Curlew, 120 Redshank, a Grey Heron, 24 Shelduck, 34 Wigeon, 4 Teal, 3 singing Cetti’s Warblers, 2 Rock Pipits, 5 Siskins, hundreds of fly over Chaffinches and a Wheatear,

A very wet day. A male Crossbill, 400+ Chaffinches, 40 Siskins, 2 Redpoll, 38 Redwings, 112 Fieldfares, 3 Mistle Thrush, 2 Rock Pipits, single Grey Wagtail and Peregrine were seen at Aust Cliff/services this morning. Highlights from Aust Warth salt marsh included a Short-eared Owl at 9 pm and 2 Jack Snipe, 2 Little Egrets, a Water Rail, 2 Pintail, 8 Wigeon, 15 Teal, a Water Pipit, 4 Rock Pipits, 2 Stonechats, 2 Ravens and a Kestrel earlier in the afternoon Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 80 Oystercatchers, 70 Curlew, 390 Dunlin, 49 Redshank, 4 Lapwings, 3 Grey Herons, 87 Canada Geese, 8 Mute Swans, 230 Teal, 48 Wigeon, 35+ Shoveler, single female type Merlin, Sparrowhawk and Wheatear. Just 110 Curlew, 60 Oystercatchers, a Grey Heron, 4 Shelduck, 20 Wigeon and 4 Mute Swans were reported from Severn Beach at low tide in foul weather.

A warmer, cloudy day with occasional heavy rain showers. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved a Curlew Sandpiper, 8 Grey Plover, 200 Lapwings, 90 Redshank, 40 Curlew, 40 Dunlin, 3 Snipe, a Grey Heron, 20 Greylag Geese, 90 Canada Geese, 2 Shelduck, 40+ Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 220+ Teal, 40+ Wigeon, 2 Peregrine, 2 Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk, 2 Siskins and a Stonechat. It was relatively quiet at Severn Beach with just 10 Curlew, 20 Wigeon, single Cetti’s Warbler being worthy of a mention.

Once again there was a good selection of birds seen from Aust Cliff/services including a Short-eared Owl, 4 Red Kites, a Marsh Harrier (cream crown flew NE), 4 Crossbills, 2 Brambling, 8 Redpolls, 94 Siskins, 360 Goldfinches, 587 Chaffinches, 877 Fieldfares, 624 Redwings, 2 Grey Wagtails, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Peregrines, 2 Kestrels, a Sparrowhawk and a Little Egret. Reports from the Pining Wetland/New Passage area involved 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 150 Redshank, 22 Lapwings, 6 Curlew, 7 Snipe, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 48 Greylag Geese, 320 Canada Geese, 5 Shelduck, 38 Shoveler, a Pintail, 40 Wigeon, 280 Teal and a hunting Marsh Harrier (cream crown). A Little Egret, just one Shelduck, 450+ Black-headed Gulls, a singing Cetti’s Warbler and a fly over Redpoll were reported from Severn Beach.

Sightings from Aust Cliff/services included a Woodlark and the first Brambling of the year (both flying North East), 6 Greylag Geese, 2 Canada Geese, 21 Redpolls (3 trapped and ringed), 30 Siskins, 2 Chiffchaff, 12 Ravens, 2 Peregrines and a Sparrowhawk. Five Grey Plover, 6 Greylag Geese, 2 Ravens and a Sparrowhawk were reported from New Passage.

A bright morning followed by torrential rain in the afternoon. A Garganey was seen this morning at Chittening Warth (Mitchell’s Salt Rhine). Reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage/ included 16 Curlew, 85 Redshank, 80 Oystercatchers, 35 Lapwing, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 24 Barnacle Geese, 58 Canada Geese, 300 Teal, 6 Shoveler, single Sparrowhawk, Wheatear and Stonechat. The weather on Shetland is even worse than today’s wet spell on Severnside. Between the torrential downpours and strong wind we managed to see a few interesting birds including a 1st winter American Golden Plover in a Golden Plover flock and a lone Tundra Bean Goose among the Greylag Geese.

Meanwhile the weather here on my Shetland trip has made finding birds difficult but news broke mid morning of the presence of a Yellow Warbler, a bird I have seen many of in Canada but was my first sighting in Britain.

The only reports received were of single Spotted Redshank and Curlew Sandpiper, 90 Redshank, 120 Dunlin, 3 Pintail and a Peregrine at New Passage and a late Spotted Flycatcher at Aust Cliff/services. It is always nice to see a few wild Swans and these were part of a flock of at least 50 Whooper Swans today on Shetland.

Another disappointing day with no reports received. I am still away on the Shetland Islands with plenty of Redwings still arriving. Other birds seen by me today included a Siberian Stonechat, Yellow-browed Warbler and Ring Ouzel with the Shetland regulars such as Eiders, Red-breasted Mergansers, Black Guillemots etc.

A sunny day with a temperature of 23°C. Reports from the Northwick Warth area included single Curlew Sandpiper and Golden Plover, 4 Ruff, 4 Grey Plover, 37 Lapwing, 141 Redshank, 4 Snipe, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 7 Greylag Geese, 42 Canada Geese, 12 Shelduck, a Garganey, 350 Teal, single Coal Tit, Grey Wagtail, Wheatear, Redpoll and Siskin. Another 22 Siskins, 3 Peregrines and 3 Ravens were seen over Aust Cliff/services. Away from Severnside on Shetland I saw plenty of winter migrants arriving for the journey South including Redwings, Fieldfares, Brambling and a few Snow Buntings so with luck they should arrive there in a few days.

A warm (22°C) and settled day. The only reports received were of 36 Redshank, 14 Curlew, a Grey Heron, 26 Canada Geese, 4 Shelduck, a Kestrel and a Stonechat in the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area. Meanwhile on my first morning on Shetland I was very relieved to see my first ever White’s Thrush on the Island of Bressay.

Another cloudy day with sunny intervals. Reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage involved a Curlew Sandpiper, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff, 5 Grey Plover, 6 Knot, 30 Curlew, 152 Redshank, 20 Turnstones, 2 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 11 Greylag Geese, 55 Canada Geese, 12 Shelduck, 24 Shoveler, 200+ Teal, 2 Wheatears, 4 Kestrels, single Merlin and Sparrowhawk. Eight Ringed Plover were seen at Severn Beach. Two Stonechats were seen at Aust Warth. Meanwhile, I am heading North today to visit the Shetland Islands and took the opportunity to visit Musselburgh near Edinburgh to observe such birds as Red-throated Divers, Red-breasted Mergansers, Slavonian Grebes, Velvet Scoters, Eider etc.that are rarities on the Severnside Patch.

Combined reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 2 Ruff, 3 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, 7 Black-tailed Godwits, 5 Grey Plover, 30 Knot, 160 Redshank, 12 Snipe, 130 Oystercatchers, 120 Curlew, 400 Dunlin, 3 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 13 Greylag Geese, 110 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 15 Shelduck, 3 Pintail, 13 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 12 Wigeon, 260 Teal, single Wheatear, Siskin, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. Ten Turnstones, 30 Curlew, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 2 Wigeon, 2 Rock Pipits, a Singing Cetti’s Warbler and a Peregrine were reported from Severn Beach.

A mainly dry and sunny day with a South West breeze. Highlight of the day was the 7th record of Glossy Ibis, seen in flight this morning and evening from Pilning Wetland and both occasions dropping out of view onto Northwick Warth. Additional reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 6 Ruff, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 230+ Redshank, 500 Dunlin, 130 Curlew, 150 Oystercatchers, 18 Snipe, 4 Lapwing, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, a Water Rail, 11 Greylag Geese, 120 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 15 Shelduck, 7 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 240 Teal, 10 Wigeon, a Whinchat, 3 Stonechats, 2 Wheatears, 3 Siskins and a Kestrel. At least 60 Curlew, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 6 Wigeon, 3 Cetti’s Warblers, 3 Stonechats, 3 Siskins, single Wheatear and Kestrel were present at Severn Beach.

A cloudy day with some rain showers. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 2 Curlew Sandpipers, 9 Ruff, 5 Grey Plover, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 400+ Dunlin, 30 Snipe, 200 Redshank, 35 Lapwings, 100+ Curlew, 85 Oystercatchers, 4 Ringed Plover, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, a Water Rail, 20 Greylag Geese, 250 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 11 Shelduck, 300 Teal, 8 Shoveler, 14 Wigeon, 2 Redpolls, single Cetti’s Warbler, Wheatear and Kestrel. Six Ringed Plover, a Dunlin, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Siskins, single Cetti’s Warbler and Wheatear were reported from Severn Beach. Another 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 5 Wigeon, 4 Gadwall, 2 Stonechats and a Whinchat were seen at Aust Warth.
1st October
A cloudy and quiet start to the month. Reports from Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth included 2 Little Stints, 5 Ruff, 50+ Lapwing, 220 Redshank, 100 Curlew, 500 Dunlin, single Snipe and Grey Heron, 100+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 40 Shelduck, 45 Wigeon, a Garganey, 16 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 100 Teal, 2 Wheatears, single Sparrowhawk, Raven and Grey Wagtail. Five Little Egrets, 50 Wigeon, a Kestrel and 2 Stonechats were seen at Aust Warth. Reports from Aust Cliff/services involved 25 Greylag Geese, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Ravens, a Grey Wagtail and 5 Siskins.
