Following two of the quietest months of the year, August can be an interesting month with a total of 186 species having been recorded during this month. The numbers and variety of waders increase, as do the numbers of migrating warblers, Yellow Wagtails, Whinchat and Wheatears. Mediterranean and Yellow-legged Gulls are expected. Rarities in August have included Slavonian Grebe (1996), Spoonbill (2019,2023), Great White Egrets (2019,2020,2021,2022,2023,2024), Red Crested Pochard (1998), Goshawk, Osprey, Caspian Gull (2006), Sabine’s Gull, Roseate Terns (2016), Red-necked Phalarope (2014), Kentish Plover (2022), White-rumped Sandpiper (1995,2001), Grey Phalarope, Wryneck (1976,1984,2003,2010,2014,2024), Rose-coloured Starling (2020), Marsh Warbler (2009) and Red-backed Shrike (2003).




August 2024




31st August
A mainly cloudy day with a moderate strength North East breeze producing some more migrants. Early morning reports from the Aust Cliff/services area included the first Firecrest of the year (juvenile female trapped and ringed), a Great White Egret, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, at least 17 Tree Pipits (including grounded birds and flyovers), single Coal Tit, Garden Warbler, Whitethroat and Willow Warbler, many Chiffchaff and Blackcaps. Two Whinchats, 3 Stonechats, single Kestrel and Kingfisher were seen at Aust Warth. Morning reports from Severn Beach included 240+ Ringed Plover, 70+ Dunlin, 70 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, 17 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 52 Shelduck, 450+ Black-headed Gulls, a Great Black-backed Gull, 2 singing Cetti’s Warblers, 4 Wheatears, single Stonechat, Spotted Flycatcher, Tree Pipit and Peregrine. A Green Sandpiper and another 2 Whinchats were seen at Pilning Wetland.

30th August
A sunny day with an East wind. The 9th Severnside record of Wryneck was found at the Aust Cliff/services area where other sightings included 2 Tree Pipits, 2 Stonechats, 20+ Chiffchaff, 15+ Blackcaps, single Garden Warbler, Whitethroat, Wheatear, Grey Wagtail, Coal Tit, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Peregrine. A Black-tailed Godwit, 35 Lapwing, 80+ Redshank and 50+ Teal were reported from Pilning Wetland. The usual mixed flock of 350+ Ringed Plover/Dunlin and Turnstones, 5+ Little Egrets and 2 Wheatears were seen at Severn Beach.

29th August
No change in the weather today but the forecast is for a change to an East wind that can only improve the chances of some new migrants. At least 2 Sanderling, 330 Ringed Plover, 90 Dunlin, 10 Turnstones, 12 Curlew, 15 Oystercatchers, a Shelduck and a Wheatear were seen at Severn Beach today. Reports from Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area included 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 85 Redshank, 58 Lapwings, 6 Curlew, 10 Oystercatchers, 8 Turnstones, 2 Snipe, 4 Grey Herons, 126 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 6 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 60+ Teal, a Red Kite, 3 Kestrels, 2 Wheatears and a Grey Wagtail.

28th August
Another day with a mixture of cloud and sunshine. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Knot, 2 Snipe, a mixed flock of Ringed Plover, Dunlin and Turnstones, single Sanderling and Green Sandpiper, 100 Redshank, 6 Curlew, 8 Oystercatchers, 35 Lapwings, a Little Egret, 4 Grey Herons, 140 Canada Geese, 9 Shelduck, 8 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall and 46 Teal. The usual flock of Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Turnstones, 9 Little Egrets, 12 Canada Geese, 4 Shelduck, 140 Mallard, a Tree Pipit and a feeding flock of 80 Goldfinches were seen at Severn Beach. A flock of 11 Greenshank flew South West over Aust Cliff/services where other reports involved a Garden Warbler, 5 Tree Pipits, 4 Yellow Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail, 3 Kestrels, 2 Ravens, single Peregrine and Swift. Another 2 Peregrine, 2 Whinchats, 2 Wheatears, 2 Stonechats and a Cetti’s Warbler were reported at Aust Warth.

27th August
A mixture of sunshine and cloud with a Southerly breeze. At least 300 Ringed Plover, 65 Dunlin, 6 Turnstones, 3 Curlew, 13 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 15 Canada Geese, 160 Mallard, 550 Black-headed Gulls, a Great Black-backed Gull, a juvenile Wheatear and 3 singing Cetti’s Warblers were reported from Severn Beach. A Green Sandpiper, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 80 Redshank, 29 Lapwings, 30 Curlew, 15 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, 7 Grey Herons, 85 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 2 Gadwall, 44 Teal, a mixed flock of c.40 Arctic Terns and 10 Common Terns (flying South), a Kestrel and 2 Ravens were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area.

Overcast early morning with light rain showers followed by a sunny afternoon. Combined reports from Severn Beach included the 4th Osprey of the year (flew NE over the Orchard pools at 15.55), 5 Sanderling, 350 Ringed Plover, 150 Dunlin, 59 Turnstones, 45 Curlew, 8 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Shelduck, single Kestrel and Grey Wagtail. A Whimbrel, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 47 Lapwings, 100+ Redshank, 35 Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, single Snipe and Great White Egret, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 120 Canada Geese, a Mute Swan, 4 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, 19 Teal, 2 Stonechats, single Wheatear and Kestrel were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Another 3 Stonechats and 2 Kestrels were seen at Aust Warth and nearby a Pheasant, 2 Little Egrets, a Kestrel, 2 Ravens, 2 Grey Wagtails and 2 Tree Pipits were reported from the Aust Cliff/services area. Single Whimbrel, Green Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper, 2 Dunlin, 9 Ringed Plover, 20 Oystercatcher, 70 Curlew, 17 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 5 Gadwall and a Kestrel were seen at Chittening Warth.

25th August
Another breezy day with some sunny spells. Combined reports from Severn Beach included 250 Ringed Plover, 100 Dunlin, 38 Turnstones, 3 Lapwings, 13 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 37 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swans, a Shelduck, 2 Yellow Wagtails, single Cetti’s Warbler, Wheatear, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Hobby. A Green Sandpiper, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 10 Ringed Plover, 106 Redshank, 17 Lapwings, 10 Curlew, 3 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 90 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 4 Shelduck, 20 Gadwall, 29 Teal, a Shoveler, 2 Wheatears, single Grey Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Kestrel and Hobby were reported in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Three Whinchats, 5 Stonechats and 4 Wheatears were reported from Aust Warth.

24th August
Some heavy rain in the morning followed by a sunny afternoon. Reports from Severn Beach included 4 Sanderling, 15 Knot, 3 Whimbrel, 100+ Ringed Plover, 100+ Dunlin, 3 Little Egrets, single Grey Heron, Kestrel and Wheatear. At least 105 Redshank, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 85 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 9 Teal, 3 Redstarts, 3 Lesser Whitethroats and a Sparrowhawk were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area.

23rd August
A sunny and breezy day following very windy conditions overnight courtesy of Storm Lilian. Sightings from Severn Beach included single Sanderling, Common Sandpiper and Knot, 240 Ringed Plover, 140 Dunlin, 45 Turnstones, 15 Little Egrets, 2 Shelduck, single juvenile Razorbill (first August record), Woodlark, Wheatear, Grey Wagtail, Kestrel and Peregrine. Single Little Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwit and Green Sandpiper, 13 Ringed Plover, 30 Lapwings, 145 Redshank, 40 Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, a Little Egret, 3 Grey Herons, 65 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 8 Shelduck, 6 Gadwall, 12 Teal, a Tufted Duck, single Wheatear, Kestrel and Raven were reported in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Another cloudy and windy day with some Spring high tides. A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 220 Ringed Plover, 120 Dunlin, 45 Curlew, single Turnstone, Little Egret, Grey Heron, juvenile Mediterranean Gull, juvenile Yellow-legged Gull and 3 Common Gulls were seen from the Severn Beach shore. Reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 3 juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, single Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 30 Ringed Plover, 2 Dunlin, 9 Turnstones, 8 Lapwings, 110 Redshank, 100 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, 60+ Canada Geese, 5 Gadwall, 6 Teal and 2 Shoveler.

21st August
A cloudy and breezy day. Combined reports from Severn Beach included a different juvenile Curlew Sandpiper from yesterday, 5 Knot, 2 Sanderling, 10 Turnstones, 240 Ringed Plover, 120+ Dunlin, 11 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron and 2 Wheatears. A Little Ringed Plover, 2 Green Sandpipers, 2+ Ringed Plover, 44 Lapwings, 45 Curlew, 50+ Oystercatchers, 100+ Redshank, single Snipe and Common Sandpiper, 11 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 85 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 4 Shelduck, 9 Shoveler, 6 Gadwall, 7 Teal, 2 Kingfishers, a hunting Hobby and 2 Kestrels were seen in the New Passage area.

A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 4 Knot, a Sanderling, 250+ Ringed Plover, 100+ Dunlin, 3 Turnstones, 40 Curlew, 8 Little Egrets and 2 Wheatears were seen at Severn Beach. Reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 3 juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, 2 Common Sandpipers, 8 Ringed Plover, 7 Dunlin, 130 Redshank, 150 Oystercatchers, 50 Curlew, 20 Lapwings, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 56 Canada Geese, 11 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 4 Teal, single Kestrel and Lesser Whitethroat. A Whimbrel, 5 Curlew, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 30 Canada Geese, 4 Shelduck, 2 Ravens, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 7 Blackcaps, 10+ Chiffchaff, single Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Reed Warbler, Tree Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Kestrel and Hobby were reported from the Aust Cliff/services area.

Sightings from Severn Beach involved at least 2 Sanderling, 4 Knot, 9 Black-tailed Godwits, 220+ Ringed Plover, 130 Dunlin, 3 Turnstones, 40 Curlew, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 20 House Martins, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 10 Blackcaps and a Willow Warbler. At least 80 Redshank, 60 Oystercatchers, 20 Lapwing, 9 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 95 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 13 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 2 Teal, a Tufted Duck, 2 Kestrels, single Peregrine, Sparrowhawk, Yellow Wagtail and Sand Martin were seen at New Passage. Sightings at and from the Aust Cliff/services area included 3 Greenshank, 14 Ringed Plover, a Dunlin, 4 Arctic Terns (heading South West), 3 Little Egrets, single Yellow Wagtail, Lesser Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Sedge Warbler, 12 Chiffchaff, 11 Blackcaps, 3 Whitethroats, 2 Wheatears, 2 Stonechats, a Raven and a Peregrine.

18th August
A sunny day with a South West breeze. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 4 Black-tailed Godwits, a Green Sandpiper, 145 Redshank, 20 Lapwing, 2 Curlew, 3 Oystercatchers, 9 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 88 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 2 Shoveler, 5 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 8+ Little Grebes, 3 Kestrels and a female Sparrowhawk (caught a Green Woodpecker). Single Whimbrel, Bar-tailed Godwit, 3 Knot, 4 Turnstones, 240+ Ringed Plover, 180+ Dunlin, 120 Curlew, 30 Oystercatchers, 14 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 14 Canada Geese, 120+ Mallard, single Great Black-backed Gull, Cetti’s Warbler and Sparrowhawk were reported from Severn Beach.

A sunny morning followed by a cloudy afternoon. Combined reports from Severn Beach included 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 270 Ringed Plover, 180 Dunlin, just 6 Turnstones, 110 Curlew, 30+ Oystercatchers, 28+ Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 18 Canada Geese, 4 Shelduck, 120 Mallard, single female Sparrowhawk, Raven and 3 Cetti’s Warblers. Two juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, a single Lapwing, 90+ Redshank, 3 Curlew, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, 120 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 2 Gadwall, 5 Teal, a Tufted Duck and 2 juvenile Kestrels were seen in the New Passage area.

16th August
A dry and sunny day. A Whimbrel, 140 Ringed Plover, 70 Dunlin, 8 Turnstones, 20 Oystercatchers, 30 Curlew, 19+ Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, a male Redstart, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, a singing Willow Warbler and Cetti’s Warbler were found on an early morning visit to the Severn Beach shore. Two Black-tailed Godwits, 9 Lapwings, 90+ Redshank, 5 Little Egrets, 180 Canada Geese, 8 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 5 Shoveler and a Sparrowhawk were reported from New Passage. Another Little Egret, a Whinchat, 3 Kestrels and a Peregrine were seen at Aust Warth.

15th August
A warm day with cloud then sunshine in a gusty South West wind. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 2 Arctic Terns, a Green Sandpiper, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 150 Redshank, 33 Lapwings, 2 Curlew, 3 Oystercatchers, a Little Egret, 3 Grey Herons, 2 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 6 Shoveler, 11 Gadwall, 160 Mallard, 13 Teal, single Tufted Duck, Great Black-backed Gull, Yellow Wagtail and Kingfisher, 2 Sand Martins and 2 Kestrels. A Whimbrel, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Knot, 140+ Ringed Plover, 90 Dunlin, 30 Oystercatchers, 28 Curlew, at least 19 Little Egrets and 6 Shelduck were seen at Severn Beach.

Overcast with a Northerly breeze for most of the day. Sightings from Severn Beach included single Sanderling and Whimbrel, 3 Knot, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Turnstones, 160 Ringed Plover, 100 Dunlin, 60 Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, 11 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons and a Sand Martin. A morning visit to Pilning Wetland/New Passage produced a Common Sandpiper, 130 Redshank, 35 Lapwing, 3 Curlew, single Oystercatcher and Little Egret, 3 Grey Herons, 30+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 10 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 5 Teal, a Tufted Duck, 5+ Little Grebes and a Kestrel.

13th August
Another dry and breezy day. Three Arctic Terns were seen at New Passage early morning. Other reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 3 juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, single Knot and Sanderling, 19 Turnstones, 23 Lapwings, 110 Redshank, 2 Common Sandpipers, 3 Ringed Plover, 32 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 139 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swan, 9 Shelduck, a Tufted Duck, 5 Shoveler, 8 Teal, 4 Gadwall, 2 Kingfishers, 3 Kestrels, single Grey Wagtail, Raven, Hobby, Peregrine,and Sparrowhawk. A Whimbrel, 62 Ringed Plover, 30 Dunlin, 6 Turnstones, 11 Oystercatchers, 30 Curlew, 15 Little Egrets and 2 Great Black-backed Gulls were seen at Severn Beach. Single Garden Warbler, Cetti’s Warbler and 2 Kestrels were reported at Aust Warth.

12th August
A breezy day with a sunny afternoon. Single Greenshank and Little Ringed Plover, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 5 Common Sandpipers, 90+ Redshank, 30 Lapwings, 8 Oystercatchers, 8 Curlew, 4 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 190 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, a Pochard, 4 Teal, 3 Shoveler and 150 Black-headed Gulls were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Reports from Severn Beach included a Sanderling, 60 Ringed Plover, 35 Turnstones, 100 Dunlin, 10 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 3 Wheatears and a Redstart. Highlights from the Aust Cliff/services area included a Ringed Plover, 4 Little Egrets, a Garden Warbler, 6 Lesser Whitethroats, 10 Blackcaps, 12 Chiffchaff, 3 Wheatears, 3 Ravens, 2 Stock Doves, 2 Kestrels, single Sparrowhawk, Peregrine and Grey Wagtail.

11th August
A hot day with the temperature exceeding 29°C. An influx of waders at Severn Beach with at least 120 Turnstones, 170 Ringed Plover and 140 Dunlin present in the roost plus 2 Little Egrets. Two Green Sandpipers, 3 juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 85+ Redshank, 8 Curlew, 28 Lapwings, 3 Oystercatchers, a few Turnstones and Ringed Plover, 19 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 95 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 8 Shelduck, 4 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 4 Teal, 4 Kestrels, 2 Yellow Wagtails and a Grey Wagtail were reported in the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area. Two Garden Warblers, a Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Tree Pipits and 2 Yellow Wagtails were reported from the Aust Cliff/services area.

A cloudy start turning warm and sunny in the afternoon. At least 10 Dunlin, 5 Ringed Plover, 20 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, 9 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 2 Shelduck, 2 singing Cetti’s Warblers and a Wheatear were reported at Severn Beach. At least 35 Dunlin, 3 juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 105 Redshank, 6 Turnstones, 35 Curlew, 5 Lapwings, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 120+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 8 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, a flock of 150 feeding Linnets, 2 Peregrines, 2 Kestrels and a Sand Martin were reported from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area.

Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 4 Little Ringed Plovers (3 juveniles), 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Turnstones, 93 Redshank, single Common Sandpiper and Snipe, 44 Ringed Plover, 200 Dunlin, 48 Curlew, 30 Oystercatchers, 6 Little Egrets and 3 Teal. A Whimbrel, 20 Ringed Plover, 90+ Dunlin, 20 Oystercatchers, 30 Curlew, 10 Little Egrets and a Wheatear were seen at Severn Beach. Two Little Egrets, 6 Kestrels, a Raven and a Lesser Whitethroat were reported from the Aust Cliff/services area and 3 Stonechats were seen at Aust Warth.

8th August
A day with some rain showers and a South West wind. Sightings from the Severn Beach shore included a Common Sandpiper, 100+ Dunlin, 20 Ringed Plover, 6 Turnstones, 50 Curlew, 30 Oystercatchers, a Redshank, 7 Little Egrets and 3 adult Great Black-backed Gulls. A high tide visit to Pilning Wetland/New Passage produced 3 Little Ringed Plovers (2 juveniles), a Black-tailed Godwit, 80+ Redshank, 37 Lapwings, 50 Oystercatchers, 6 Turnstones, 3 Dunlin, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 280+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans (4 cygnets), 6 Shelduck, 2 Shoveler, 2 Teal, single Great Black-backed Gull, 2 Kestrels, 140 Linnets, a Kingfisher and a Common Seal.

7th August
A mixture of sunshine, cloud and rain showers with a moderate strength South West wind. A pair of Common Scoter, a Whimbrel, 7 Ringed Plover, 28 Turnstones, 20 Dunlin, 34 Oystercatchers, 20 Curlew and 10 Little Egrets were seen from Severn Beach. Combined sightings from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved 3 Little Ringed Plovers (2 juveniles), 2 Whimbrel, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, single Sanderling, Common Sandpiper and Snipe, 4 Ringed Plover, 58 Curlew, 61 Oystercatchers, 115 Redshank, 19 Turnstones, 85 Dunlin, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 150 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 2 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 2 Teal, a Tufted Duck, 600+ Black-headed Gulls, 120 Linnets, single Raven, Whinchat and Tree Pipit. Reports from the Aust Cliff/services area included 14 Black-tailed Godwits (flying South West), 12 Oystercatchers, 7 Curlew, 29 Canada Geese, 2 Ravens, single Peregrine, Kestrel, Sedge Warbler and Wheatear. 6th August
A sunny day with a moderate breeze from the West. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved a Common Sandpiper, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 103 Redshank, 31 Lapwings, 46 Curlew, 45 Oystercatchers, 26 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 290 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 8 Shelduck, 2 Shoveler, 2 Teal, 2 Kestrels, single Sand Martin and Lesser Whitethroat. At least 135 Dunlin, 23 Ringed Plover, 10 Turnstones, 9 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, a drake Common Scoter and 2 singing Cetti’s Warblers were reported from Severn Beach. A Great White Egret, 3 Wheatears, 2 Grey Wagtails, single Garden Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel were seen from Aust Cliff/services and nearby an adult Stonechat was feeding 2 juveniles at Aust Warth.

5th August
The same weather as yesterday. Reports from Severn beach involved 4 Whimbrel, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 23 Ringed Plover, 9 Turnstones, 150 Dunlin (including a colour-ringed bird; Orange ring on left leg and Yellow ring with Black 2WA on right leg. It was ringed as an adult on 18.8.2023 at Ynyslas NNR, Ceredigion, Wales), 25 Curlew, 30 Oystercatchers, a Great White Egret, 5 Little Egrets, 18 full grown juvenile Shelduck, single Peregrine and Sparrowhawk. Just 7 Lapwings, 100+ Redshank, 40 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, 3 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 300+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 10 Shelduck, 2 Teal, a Great Black-backed Gull, 600 Starlings and 3 Kestrels were reported from New Passage.

4th August
A cloudy morning followed by a warm and sunny afternoon with a light South West wind. Two Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Sandpipers, 15 Lapwings, 123 Redshank, 20 Curlew, 41 Little Egrets, 280 Canada Geese, 5 Teal, and 2 Willow Warblers were seen in the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area. Reports from Severn Beach included a Sanderling, 150 Dunlin, 35 Ringed Plover, 10 Turnstones, 30 Curlew, 30 Oystercatchers, 8 Little Egrets and a Great Black-backed Gull. Another 5 Little Egrets were seen at Aust Warth.

3rd August
A dry, sunny and breezy day. Reports from Severn Beach included a Whimbrel, 33 Turnstone, 153 Dunlin, 48 Ringed Plover, 32 Curlew, a Little Egret and 5 Canada Geese. Single Little Ringed Plover and Green Sandpiper, 6 Dunlin, 104 Redshank, 6 Lapwing, 29 Turnstones, 6 Oystercatchers, 60 Curlew, 30 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 250 Canada Geese, 11 Shelduck, 3 Gadwall, 2 Teal, a Shoveler, 7 Little Grebes, a 2nd summer Mediterranean Gull, a Great Black-backed Gull, 300 Black-headed Gulls, 9 Kestrels, single Sparrowhawk and Kingfisher were seen from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage/Northwick Warth area. Two Little Egrets and a Stonechat were seen at Aust Warth.

2nd August
A mainly sunny day with a South West breeze. Single Little Ringed Plover, Green Sandpiper and Black-tailed Godwit, 7 Turnstones, 90 Redshank, 32 Lapwing, 10 Curlew, 3 Oystercatchers, 12 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 290+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans (4 cygnets), 12 Shelduck, 6 Gadwall, 6+ Little Grebes, a juvenile Mediterranean Gull and 280+ Black-headed Gulls were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. A Sanderling, at least 41 Ringed Plover, 160 Dunlin, 6 Turnstones, 15 Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, 9 Little Egrets, 9 Canada Geese, 3 adult Great Black-backed Gulls, a flock of 250 Starlings, a singing Cetti’s Warbler and an adult Peregrine were reported from Severn Beach.

A humid 26°C start to the month. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth included single adult Little Ringed Plover, Green Sandpiper and Snipe, 9 Black-tailed Godwits, 8 Dunlin, 3 Turnstones, 84 Redshank, 30 Lapwings, 5 Curlew, 17 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 300+ Canada Geese, 22 Shelduck, 3 Teal, 5+ Little Grebes, 280 Black-headed Gulls, 150 Linnets, 6 Kestrels (4 juveniles) a Yellow Wagtail and a Sparrowhawk. Three Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Whimbrel, 35 Curlew, 15 Oystercatchers, a Grey Heron, 2 Shelduck, single Great Black-backed Gull and Cetti’s Warbler were reported from Severn beach. A Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Common Sandpipers and 2 Stonechats were seen at Aust Warth. Reports from the Aust Cliff/services area included 6 Curlew, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Willow Warblers, 5 Chiffchaff, 3 Blackcaps and 2 Ravens.
