September is one of the most exciting months to visit Severnside. The total of 203 species seen at least once in this month, is the third highest in the year. It is the time when most of the summer visitors will depart and a good selection of early winter visitors will arrive towards the end of the month. Any West or South West gales will produce the usual seabirds but the more exotic have occurred; Sooty Shearwater (1974), Balearic Shearwater (1988), Long-tailed Skua, Sabine’s Gull. Other rarities that have appeared in September include; Red-crested Pochard (2 in 1996), White Storks (2010), Glossy Ibis (2010,2021), Cattle Egret (2012,2020,2023), Crane (2014,2023), Honey Buzzard (1996), White-tailed Eagle (2024), Dotterel (1974), Kentish Plover (2006), Pectoral Sandpiper (1998,2006,2008,2014,2016,2019,2020), White-rumped Sandpiper (1985), Buff-breasted Sandpiper (1989,2003), Terek Sandpiper (1986), Semipalmated Sandpiper (2009), Lesser Yellowlegs (1984,2024), Red-rumped Swallow (1977), Wryneck (2003,2010,2015), Rose-coloured Starling (2004,2018), Ortolan Bunting (2018) and Yellow-browed Warbler (2017,2022). Local rarities have included pale-bellied Brent Geese, Osprey, Spoonbill (2008,2011,2020), Great White Egret (2013,2016,2019,2020,2022,2023,2024), Nightjar (2006,2013), Hawfinch, Willow Tit (1992), Nightingale (1999), Lapland Bunting and Ring Ouzel.

30th September
A grey and breezy morning following a wet and windy night. A fantastic end to the month with a first record of Lesser Yellowlegs on Pilning Wetland where sightings included the Spotted Redshank, 40+ Knot, 2 Ruff, 15 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 90 Curlew, 18 Snipe, 20 Ringed Plover, 150+ Redshank, 38 Lapwings, 100+ Dunlin, 6 Turnstones, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 43 Greylag Geese, 400+ Canada Geese, 4 Mute Swans, 12 Shelduck, 35+ Shoveler, 30+ Gadwall, 30 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, 140+ Teal, 4 Tufted Duck, a Garganey (1st of the year), 2 Ravens, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 4 Wheatears, 2 Grey Wagtails, single Kestrel, Peregrine, Sparrowhawk, Coal Tit and Yellow Wagtail. At least 30 Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin, 12 Curlew, 5 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 6 Shelduck, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, a Common Gull, 2 Stonechats, single Kestrel and Cetti’s Warbler were reported at Severn Beach. A cool and cloudy day with a South East breeze. The Spotted Redshank, 2 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 6 Knot, 11 Dunlin, 6 Ringed Plovers, 50+ Turnstones, 120 Redshank, 70 Lapwings, 14 Curlew, 13 Snipe, 25 Oystercatchers, 3 Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 55 Greylag Geese, 400 Canada Geese, 5 Mute Swans, 18 Shelduck, 40+ Shoveler, 45+ Gadwall, 68 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 180 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, single juvenile Great Black-backed Gull, Kingfisher, Kestrel, Grey Wagtail and Sand Martin, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 2 Wheatears and 2 Ravens were reported from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Reports from the Severn Beach shore included a Common Sandpiper, 21 Ringed Plover, 12 Dunlin, 9 Curlew, a Snipe, 3 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 12 Shelduck, 4 Wigeon, 2 Rooks, 3 singing Cetti’s Warblers and 2 Stonechats. A Hawfinch flew North East over Aust Cliff/services where other reports involved a Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrels, a late Tree Pipit and a Redpoll. Five Stonechats were seen on Aust Warth

28th September
A dry and sunny day with a light West breeze. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included the Spotted Redshank, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 5 Knot, 150+ Redshank, 70 Lapwings, 18 Curlew, 4 Dunlin, 11 Snipe, single Ringed Plover, Turnstone, Oystercatcher and Little Egret, 4 Grey Herons, 55 Greylag Geese, 420 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 28 Shelduck, 97 Shoveler, 51 Gadwall, 48 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, 290 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, 4 Kestrels, 4 Jays, 2 Ravens, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, single Water Rail, Common Gull, Kingfisher, Coal Tit, Stonechat, Sedge Warbler, Grey Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Crossbill (1st of the year) and Redwing (1st of the Autumn). A low tide visit to Severn Beach produced 7 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 29 Shelduck, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 3 Stonechats and a Siskin. Sighting from the Aust Cliff/services area involved 2 Peregrine, 2 Ravens, a Coal Tit, 9 Chiffchaffs and a flyover Siskin. Nearby, 2 Stonechats, single Kestrel, Peregrine and buck Roe Deer were seen at Aust Wetland.

27th September
A cool day with some light rain showers and North Wind. Sightings from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 2 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, a Spotted Redshank, 2 Greenshank, 110 Redshank, 35 Lapwings, 45 Curlew, 6 Snipe, 6 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, single Oystercatcher and Little Egret, 3 Grey Herons, 21 Greylag Geese, 300+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 21 Shelduck, 4 Pintail, 40+ Shoveler, 30 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 140+ Teal, 3 Tufted Duck, 2 Kestrels, 4 Stonechats and 4 Wheatears.

26th September
A sunny start turning showery later with a gusty South West wind. Combined reports from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 2 Curlew Sandpipers, 4 Ruff, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 25 Knot, 18 Ringed Plover, 15 Dunlin, 73 Lapwing, a Golden Plover, 125 Redshank, 13 Curlew, 27 Snipe, a Great White Egret, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 35 Greylag Geese, 350 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 28 Shelduck, 90 Shoveler, 27 Gadwall, 17 Wigeon, 5 Pintail, 300+ Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, 3 Cetti’s Warblers, 4 Wheatears, 3 Stonechats, 2 Ravens, single Grey Wagtail, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. The usual mixed flock of Ringed Plover, Dunlin and Turnstones, 3 Wheatears and a Raven were seen at Severn Beach. Nine Dunlin, a Ringed Plover, 16 Redshank, 7 Curlew, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 15 Teal, single Cetti’s Warbler and Stonechat were reported from Aust Warth.

25th September
A cloudy day with a few sunny spells, light rain in the afternoon with a light breeze from the South. Two Curlew Sandpipers, 3 Ruff, 6 Golden Plover, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, single Spotted Redshank, Greenshank and Bar-tailed Godwit, 14 Ringed Plover, 8 Dunlin, 7 Turnstones, 75+ Redshank, 59 Lapwing, 20 Curlew, 2 Oystercatchers, a Great White Egret, 4 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 25 Greylag Geese, 500 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 25 Shelduck, 25 Wigeon, 2 Tufted Duck, the usual Shoveler, Gadwall and Teal, 3 Kestrels, a Peregrine, 650 Swallows, 55 House Martins, 3 Sand Martins, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 2 Rock Pipits, single Grey Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, a late Reed Warbler and Coal Tit were reported from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. A Sanderling was seen with the mixed Ringed Plover/Dunlin flock at Severn Beach. Reports from Aust Cliff/services included 40 Redshank, 20 Oystercatchers, 15 Dunlin, 3 Curlew, a Snipe, 7 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 7 Common Gulls, 8 Canada Geese, 29 Wigeon, 35 Teal, 3 Sparrowhawks, 11 Buzzards, 2 Peregrines, single Kestrel, Hobby, Raven and Grey Wagtail.

24th September
A dry and cloudy day. Single Curlew Sandpiper and Sanderling, 66 Ringed Plover, 117 Dunlin, 20 Turnstones, 45 Oystercatchers, 58 Curlew, 12 Little Egrets, 6 Grey Herons, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, 7 Shelduck, 12 Wigeon, 5 Wheatears, single Cetti’s Warbler, Stonechat, Hobby, Peregrine and Kestrel were reported from Severn Beach. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage included the Spotted Redshank, a Ruff, 27 Knot, 15 Ringed Plover, 21 Dunlin, 55 Lapwings, 29 Snipe, 90+ Redshank, 40 Curlew, 55 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 50+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 2 Shelduck, 40 Shoveler, 45 Gadwall, 150+ Teal, 3 Tufted Duck, 4 Pintail, single Wheatear, Cetti’s Warbler, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. Four Stonechats were seen at Aust Warth.

23rd September
Heavy rain all day in a North West breeze. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area included single Little Stint, Spotted Redshank, Ruff and Turnstone, 4 Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 34 Snipe, 90 Redshank, 85 Lapwings, 25 Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin, 77 Oystercatchers, 100+ Curlew, 6 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 63 Shoveler, 21 Gadwall, 120 Teal, 4 Pintail and a Kingfisher. A Purple Sandpiper, 20 Ringed Plover, a Redshank, 9+ Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 20+ Shelduck and 2 Wigeon were seen at he Severn Beach shore. 22nd September
A very wet day with a few dry moments. Single juvenile Black Tern and Spotted Redshank, 2 Ruff, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 150 Redshank, 85 Lapwings, 90 Oystercatchers, 120 Curlew, a Common Sandpiper, 24 Snipe, 52 Ringed Plover, 105 Dunlin, single Turnstone and Little Egret, 3 Grey Herons, a new record flock of 800+ Canada Geese, 3 Greylag Geese, 5 Mute Swans, 28 Shelduck, 35 Shoveler, 30 Gadwall, 90 Mallard, 4 Pintail, 200 Teal, single Common Gull and Kestrel were seen in the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area. A very wet visit to the Severn Beach shore in poor visibility produced 40 Ringed Plover, 60 Dunlin, 13 Curlew, a Little Egret, 30+ Shelduck, 3 Teal and a Wheatear.

Another day with a cool North East wind with cloud, sunshine and occasional heavy shower. A Purple Sandpiper was found roosting on the wader scrape at Pilning Wetland (1st September record for Severnside and 1st ever at Pilning Wetland), where other reports included a Spotted Redshank, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Knot, a Common Sandpiper, 46 Dunlin, 16 Ringed Plover, 66 Lapwings, 90 Oystercatchers, 90 Curlew, 3 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 4 Greylag Geese, 700+ Canada Geese (record count), 7 Mute Swans, 7 Shelduck, 50 Shoveler, 30 Gadwall, 10 Wigeon, 4 Pintail, 200 Teal, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 2 Grey Wagtails, single Kingfisher, Yellow Wagtail, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. At least 40 Ringed Plover, 120 Dunlin, 11 Curlew, 4 Great White Egrets, 5 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 24 Shelduck, 2 Teal, 12 Wigeon, a Tufted Duck, single Cetti’s Warbler and Rock Pipit were reported from the Severn Beach shore. Three Golden Plover, a Snipe, 5 Grey Wagtails, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Siskins, a Sparrowhawk and a Tree Pipit were reported at Aust Cliff/services. Another 24 Teal were seen at Chittening Warth.

A cool and cloudy start but some sunshine later in a North East wind. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included a Spotted Redshank, 4 Avocets, 5 Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Sanderling, a Golden Plover, 56 Lapwings, 10 Dunlin, 15 Turnstones, 10 Snipe, 24 Ringed Plover, 180 Redshank, 110 Curlew, 100+ Oystercatchers, single Great White Egret and Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, a 1st winter Mediterranean Gull, 3 Greylag Geese, 450 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 60 Shoveler, 3 Pintail, 10+ Gadwall, 14 Wigeon, 200 Teal, 2 Ravens, 2 Grey Wagtails, 2000+ Swallows, single Peregrine, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Wheatear and Yellow Wagtail. At least 20 Ringed Plover, 11 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 20 Canada Geese, 65 Shelduck, 8 Wigeon, 2 Cetti’s Warblers and a fly over Yellowhammer were reported from Severn Beach. Another 2 Little Egrets and 8 Stonechats were reported from Aust Warth.

18th September
The dry sunny weather continued with a gusty North East wind. The first 2 Spotted Redshank of the year, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 2 Knot, single Ruff, Greenshank, Golden Plover and Common Sandpiper, 2 Turnstones, 11 Ringed Plover, 5 Dunlin, 6 Snipe, 220 Redshank, 40 Lapwings, 104 Curlew, 140 Oystercatchers, 5 Great White Egrets, 9 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 4 Greylag Geese, 500+ Canada Geese, 8 Mute Swans, 44 Shoveler, 47 Gadwall, 11 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, 233 Teal, single Tufted Duck and Great Crested Grebe (flying South), 8 Little Grebes, 2 Kestrel, 2 Ravens, 12 Sand Martins, 2 Whinchats, 4 Yellow Wagtails, 4 Grey Wagtails, single Sparrowhawk, Kingfisher, Cetti’s Warbler and Wheatear were reported from the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area. At least 150 Dunlin, 20 Ringed Plover, single Turnstone and Little Egret were seen at Severn Beach. Another Great White Egret, 4 Grey Wagtails, 2 Sand Martins and a Peregrine were reported from Aust Cliff/services this morning.

17th September
Another dry and sunny day with a light North East wind. An immature White-tailed Eagle, part of the Isle of Wight reintroduction scheme, was seen flying South West over Aust Cliff/services just before midday and 15 minutes later it drifted high South over Severn Beach being mobbed briefly by a Buzzard. Other reports from Severn Beach included a Bar-tailed Godwit, 4 Knot, 250 Dunlin, 50 Ringed Plover, 21 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Canada Geese, 52 Shelduck, 14 Teal, 2 Wheatears, single Lesser Whitethroat, Grey Wagtail and Cetti’s Warbler. Another 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 2 Greenshank, 2 Ruff, 40 Lapwings, 13 Snipe, 130 Oystercatchers, 133 Curlew, 2 Dunlin, a Ringed Plover, 3 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 11 Greylag Geese, 500 Canada Geese, a Mute Swan, 2 Shelduck, 52 Shoveler, 32 Gadwall, 5 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, 135 Teal, single Tufted Duck, Sparrowhawk, and Raven, 2 Kestrels, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 3 Whinchats and a Grey Wagtail.

16th September
Another sunny day with with wind veering to a good direction for the time of year; a nice North Easterly. Sightings from Pilning Wetland/New Passage included 3 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Ruff, 2 Greenshank, 240 Redshank, 6 Snipe, 40 Lapwings, 75 Oystercatchers, 20 Curlew, 2 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 500+ Canada Geese, a Mute Swan, 3 Shelduck, 14 Shoveler, 14 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 70+ Teal, a Common Gull, 3 Kestrels, 3 Whinchats, 5 Wheatear, and Grey Wagtail. At least 90 Ringed Plover, 140 Dunlin, 20 Turnstones, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons and 34 Shelduck were seen at Severn Beach. Two Whinchats were seen at Aust Warth

15th September
The weather remained sunny with a South West wind. Reports from Severn Beach included a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper (evening tide), 4 Bar-tailed Godwits, 80 Ringed Plover, 280 Dunlin, 20 Turnstones, 40 Curlew, 4 Oystercatchers, 10+ Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 56 Shelduck, a Great Black-backed Gull, 800 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Cetti’s Warblers, single Grey Wagtail and Kestrel. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved 32 Lapwings, 200+ Redshank, just one Dunlin, 40 Curlew, 10 Oystercatchers, 15 Turnstones, 3 Grey Herons, 360+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 21 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 80+ Teal, a Tufted Duck, 2 Kestrels and a Grey Wagtail.

14th September
Another sunny day with a light South West wind. Combined reports from Severn Beach included 120 Ringed Plover, 80 Dunlin, 20 Turnstones, 50 Curlew, 30 Oystercatchers, 12 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 76 Shelduck and 3 singing Cetti’s Warblers. The juvenile Curlew Sandpiper remained on Pilning Wetland where other sightings involved single Common Sandpiper and Snipe, 220 Redshank, 4 Lapwings, 4 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 3 Greylag Geese, 440+ Canada Geese, 4 Mute Swans, 13 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 4 Wigeon, 70+ Teal, a Tufted Duck, 3 Whinchats, single Kingfisher, Wheatear, Grey Wagtail, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

13th September
A pleasant sunny day with light wind. Combined reported from the Severn Beach area included 55 Ringed Plover, 76 Dunlin, 30 Turnstones, 30 Curlew, 6 Oystercatchers, 9 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 65 Shelduck, 3 Great Black-backed Gulls, a singing Cetti’s Warbler, 4 Whinchats and 4 Stonechats. A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 4 Ruff, 4 Greenshank, a Common Sandpiper, 51 Lapwings, 110 Redshank, 30 Turnstones, 40 Curlew, 15 Snipe, 4 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 60 Greylag Geese, 320+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, a Shelduck, 12 Shoveler, 3 Pintail, 8 Gadwall, 9 Wigeon, 200 Teal, a Tufted Duck, 4 Whinchats, 2 Wheatears, single Sand Martin, Willow Warbler, Grey Wagtail and Yellow Wagtail were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. A Stonechat was seen at Aust Warth. Another 21 Ringed Plover, 4 Dunlin and 34 Teal were reported from Chittening Warth.

12th September
A sunny day with a cool West/North West wind. The first Great Skua of the year was seen flying high North East over Northwick Warth where other sightings included single juvenile Black Tern, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit and Green Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank, 3 Ruff, 3 Common Sandpipers, 6 Snipe, 170 Redshank, 30 Lapwings, 4 Dunlin, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 330+ Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 3 Pintail, 15 Wigeon, 10 Shoveler, 10 Gadwall, 70 Teal, single Tufted Duck and Shelduck, 2 Sand Martins, 3 Whinchats, 2 Wheatears, 2 Sand Martins, 2 Grey Wagtails, 4 Kestrels, 2 Ravens and a Coal Tit. There was no wader roost at Severn Beach today due to “just” a 9.4 metre high tide (14.5 metre in week’s time) but at a mixed feeding flock of 160 Dunlin/Ringed Plover/Turnstones with a few Curlew and Oystercatchers were seen spread over the mud flats plus 16 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 2 Peregrines and a Kestrel. An Arctic Tern, 7 Knot, 2 Dunlin, a Grey Heron and 100+ grounded Meadow Pipits were reported from Aust Cliff/services.

11th September
A cool day with a gusty West wind. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area involved single Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper, 3 Ruff, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Greenshank, 5+ Snipe, 2 Dunlin, 170 Redshank, 50 Lapwings, 35 Curlew, 3 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 300+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 3 Pintail, 12 Gadwall, 15 Shoveler, 60+ Teal, 25 Wigeon, single Tufted Duck, Black Tern, Hobby, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Sand Martin, Spotted Flycatcher and Redstart, 3 Kestrels, 2 Whinchat, 3 Wheatears and 2 Ravens. Two Manx Shearwaters, 120 Ringed Plover, 80 Dunlin, 50 Turnstones, 10 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron and 56 Shelduck were seen at Severn Beach.

10th September
A blustery day with a moderate strength West wind and some rain showers. Reports from Severn Beach included 4 Manx Shearwaters, a Black Tern, 90 Ringed Plover, 35 Dunlin, 40 Turnstones, 30 Curlew, 15 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 40 Shelduck, a juvenile Common Gull, 3 Great Black-backed Gulls, 3 Cetti’s Warblers, single Sand Martin and Grey Wagtail. A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 3 Ruff, 15 Knot, 18 Turnstones, 100+ Redshank, 2 Little Egrets, 300+ Canada Geese, 3 Shelduck, 3 Pintail, 10 Wigeon, 70 Teal, 4 flyover Tree Pipits, single Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail and Wheatear were seen in the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area.

9th September
A dry and sunny day with a North West breeze. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area included a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 5 Ruff, 9 Knot, 200 Redshank, 5 Snipe, 3 Dunlin, single Green Sandpiper and Ringed Plover, 2 Common Sandpipers, 21 Lapwings, 11 Oystercatchers, 55 Curlew, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 10 Greylag Geese, 340+ Canada Geese, 3 Mute Swans, 16 Gadwall, 12 Shoveler, 100+ Teal, 30 Wigeon, 7 Pintail, a Tufted Duck, 5 Whinchats, 9 Wheatears, 4 Kestrels, single Kingfisher, Raven, Peregrine and Grey Wagtail. A Common Sandpiper, 110 Ringed Plover, 35 Dunlin, 20 Turnstones, 70 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, 22 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 8 Canada Geese, 38 Shelduck, 3 Wheatears, single Cetti’s Warbler, Kestrel and Grey Wagtail were reported from Severn Beach.

A murky day following a very wet night. Single Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper and Ruff, 3 Greenshank, 102 Ringed Plover, 36 Turnstones, 33 Dunlin, a Grey Heron, 2 Wheatears and a Yellow Wagtail were reported from Severn Beach. Reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 4 Ruff, single Green Sandpiper, Greenshank, Black-tailed Godwit and Common Sandpiper, 5 Knot, 6 Snipe, 3 Ringed Plover, 45 Lapwing, 150 Redshank, 110 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, 4 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 10 Greylag Geese, 310 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 16 Shoveler, 31 Gadwall, 19 Wigeon, a Tufted Duck, 3 Pintail, 60+ Teal, 3 Kestrels, single Sparrowhawk, Kingfisher, Spotted Flycatcher, Stonechat and Sedge Warbler, 2 Grey Wagtails and 4 Wheatears. Reports from Aust Cliff/services included a Common Sandpiper, 3 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 5 Canada Geese, 3 Shelduck, a Raven, 2 Kestrels, 2 Peregrine, a Stonechat, 5 Wheatears and a Yellow Wagtail.

Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included an Osprey (flying South West at 10.15), 2 Ruff, 8 Knot, a Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Common Sandpipers, 24 Snipe, 30 Lapwings, 80 Redshank, 150 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, single Green Sandpiper and Greenshank, 5 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 70 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swans, a Shelduck, 28 Shoveler, 14 Gadwall, 5 Pintail, 200 Teal, 9 Wigeon, a Kingfisher, 2 Peregrine, 2 Kestrels, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Sedge Warblers, 7 Whinchats, 4 Wheatears and 6 Grey Wagtails. Single Curlew Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper and Redshank, 140 Ringed Plover, 80 Dunlin 19 Turnstones, 60 Curlew, 9 Oystercatchers, an impressive 37 Little Egrets, 5 Grey Herons, 16 Canada Geese, 14 Shelduck, 4 Wigeon, 190 Mallard, 6 Teal, single cock Pheasant and Great Back-backed Gull, 3 Cetti’s Warblers (one actually seen), 4 Whitethroats and a Lesser Whitethroat were reported from Severn Beach. Another Osprey flew South West from Aust Cliff/services just after midday where other reports included 10 Avocets (flew North East), 3 Whimbrel, 5 Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers, 4 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 6 Canada Geese, a Shelduck, 14 Gadwall, a Wigeon, 100 Teal, 17 Common Terns (flew South West), 2 Ravens, single Kestrel, Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Willow Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler, 25 Sand Martins, 1500 Swallows, 1200 House Martins, 30 Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroats and 4 Wheatears.

6th September
A miserable day with some thunderstorms and torrential rain. The 5th Osprey record of the year flew North, upriver, at Severn Beach where other sightings included 120 Ringed Plover, 100 Dunlin, 50 Turnstones, 5 Oystercatchers, 14 Curlew, 11 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 30 Shelduck, a Wigeon and 5 Wheatears. A 1st winter Little Gull and 5 Wheatears were reported from Chittening Warth. At least 6 Ruff, 3 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Green Sandpipers, 5 Snipe, 30 Ringed Plover, 4 Dunlin, 35 Lapwing, 160 Redshank, 200 Curlew, 110 Oystercatcher, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 140 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 14 Shoveler, 16 Gadwall, 10 Wigeon, 60+ Teal, single Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Whinchat and Sand Martin, 5 Wheatears and 3 Kestrels were seen in the Northwick Warth/Pilning Wetland area.

5th September
Very wet with a cold North East wind. At least 180 Ringed Plover, 95 Dunlin, 30 Turnstones, 9 Oystercatchers, 50 Curlew, single Common Sandpiper and Little Egret, 18 Shelduck, 280+ Swallows, a Sand Martin and 7 Wheatears were reported from Severn Beach. Sightings from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included 2 Knot, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 150 Redshank, 25 Lapwings, 10 Oystercatchers, 12 Curlew, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 130 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 12 Shoveler, 8 Gadwall, 20+ Teal and 2 Sand Martins. A good selection of migrants were seen at Aust Cliff/services including a Pied Flycatcher, 4 Spotted Flycatchers, 6 Tree Pipits, 8 Yellow Wagtails, 2645 Swallows, 390 House Martins, 50+ Chiffchaff, 4 Willow Warblers, single Swift, Wheatear, Peregrine and Kestrel.

4th September
Another cloudy day. The juvenile Little Stint, 2 Ruff, single Bar-tailed Godwit and Black-tailed Godwit, 7 Knot, a Ringed Plover, 41 Turnstones, 80 Redshank, 80 Curlew, 90 Oystercatchers, 40+ Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, a Shelduck, 40+ Teal, 2 Wheatears and a female type Marsh Harrier were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area. Combined reports from Severn Beach included a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 270 Ringed Plover, 110 Dunlin, 30 Turnstones, 45 Oystercatchers, 8+ Little Egrets, 4 Grey Herons, 21 Canada Geese, 11 Shelduck, 180+ Mallard, 4 Wheatears, 4 singing Cetti’s Warblers and a Grey Wagtail. Three Spotted Flycatchers, 3 Wheatears, 20+ Chiffchaff, 8 Blackcaps, single Coal Tit, Peregrine, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel were seen at Aust Cliff/services this morning.

A cloudy day following some early morning rain. A Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, 220+ Ringed Plovers, 130 Dunlin, single Common Sandpiper and Turnstone (of note, 210 of the local Turnstones were seen this morning just South of the Severnside recording area at Holes Mouth, Avonmouth), 8+ Little Egrets, 10 Canada Geese, 17 Shelduck, 2 Gadwall and 5 Wheatears were seen at Severn Beach. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included the first juvenile Little Stint of the year, 3 Avocets, 2 juvenile Ruff, 12 Knot, 2 Whimbrel, single Black-tailed Godwit, Green Sandpiper and Snipe, 6 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, 3 Turnstones, 110 Redshank, 30 Lapwings, 100+ Curlew, 100+ Oystercatchers, 3 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, an escaped Swan Goose, 106 Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 15 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall and 45+ Teal. Reports from the Aust Cliff/services area included the first Black Tern of the year with an Arctic Tern (flying South west), 3+ Spotted Flycatchers, 20+ Blackcaps, 30+ Chiffchaffs, single Whitethroat, Wheatear and Raven. A Whinchat was seen at Aust Warth.

There were some good records from the Aust Cliff/services area today including 47 Arctic Terns (flying South West), single Curlew Sandpiper, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel and Little Egret, 7 Wigeon, a Pied Flycatcher, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Redstarts, a Tree Pipit, 60+ Chiffchaff, a Willow Warbler, 2 Whitethroats, a Lesser Whitethroat, 15+ Blackcaps, 2 Coal Tits, 250+ Swallows, 20 Sand Martins, 2 Ravens, 2 Kestrels, single Wheatear, Grey Wagtail and Peregrine. A Stonechat was seen at Aust Warth. Combined reports from Severn Beach involved single Curlew Sandpiper, Sanderling and Whimbrel, 4 Common Sandpipers, 300 Ringed Plover, 120 Dunlin, 26 Turnstones, 30 Oystercatcher, 20+ Curlew, 6+ Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 9 Teal and Wheatear. Single Bar-tailed Godwit, Green Sandpiper and Snipe, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Whimbrel, 6 Knot, 120 Redshank, 200+ Curlew, 27 Lapwings, 20+ Oystercatchers, 17 Little Egrets, 50+ Canada Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 9 Shoveler, 60+ Teal, 10 Wigeon, single Tufted Duck, Grey Wagtail, Kestrel, Raven and Jay were seen in the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area.

A misty start, brighter later in a North East wind and thunderstorms late afternoon. At least one juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, single Sanderling and Common Sandpiper, 240 Ringed Plovers, 100 Dunlin, 45 Turnstones, 4 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 2 Wheatears, single Lesser Whitethroat, Grey Wagtail and Sparrowhawk were reported from Severn Beach. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/New Passage area included a Whimbrel, 2 Ruff, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, a Green Sandpiper, 130 Redshank, 100+ Curlew, 50 Oystercatchers, 30 Lapwings, 6 Ringed Plover, 3 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 50 Canada Geese, 7 Mute Swans, 7 Shoveler, 85 Teal, 2 Wheatears, 2 Kestrels and a Sparrowhawk. Two Whinchats, 4+ Spotted Flycatchers, a Garden Warbler, a Kestrel and 8 Wigeon were seen from the Aust Cliff/services area.
