Tundra Bean Goose

Anser Serrirostris
The first Severnside record of Tundra Bean Goose occurred on 28th December 2025. Their arrival coincided with a National influx over the previous few days of Tundra Bean Geese and White-fronted Geese during a prolonged period of strong North East winds from Europe. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was stood photographing some White-fronted Geese present for their 3rd day when I glanced inland and noticed a group of 7 small “Grey geese” circling the wetland. While looking through my binoculars I immediately ruled them out from being Greylag, White-fronted or Pink-footed Geese so quickly took some pictures of them in flight. Enlarging the images showed them clearly to be Bean Geese.

The flock moved West and circled the Northwick Warth salt marsh and for a moment I thought they might drop into the large flock of Canada Geese, Greylag Geese and White-fronted Geese but they continued West across the estuary towards Gwent. Presumably the same 7 birds were seen heading North past Usk Castle about an hour later.
